Virkande vantar i handspunnet

Jag upptäckte att en del av det jag spunnit under året kanske inte riktigt lånade sig till stickning. En fin mössa till minsta brorsdottern blev det, men en del garn trivs visst bättre med virknålen. SÅ jag virkade ett par uppifrån och ner vantar.

Det gick åt cirka 110 g hemspunnet och jag använde virknål 3.0 mm. Jag började med en ögla som jag stickade 6 fm i. Sedan ökade jag 6 ggr/varv tills jag hade 30 m. Tummen är gjord med 14 m.

Jag virkade båda vantarna parallellt, genom att jag gjorde en sektion i taget med en tråd utifrån och en inifrån nystanet. När jag gjort en sektion lade jag undan den och gjorde samma sektion på den andra vanten. Lite som att sticka två vantar eller sockar på magic loop. I slutet fick jag repa upp lite på den ena vanten för att det skulle bli jämnt. Sånt är kul!

Det är rosa merino som tvinnats med en grov grå ull som jag köpte för många år sedan på Kinnekulle.
När garnet var slut behövde jag ett par muddar och då hade jag ett litet nystan med kedjetvinnat vitt garn i ull från Norge att fortsätta med. Det gick inte åt helt, men jag gissar att det kan komma väl till hands i andra projekt.
Precis som alla virkade vantar så sitter de perfekt och har en rörlighet fast de är riktigt tjocka. Rörligheten beror förstås på att de virkas i bakre maskbågen och inte genom båda maskbågarna. Det ger också en struktur på vantarna som gör att en del frågar om de är nålbundna.

Lillevantar

Lilla Eddie hade sina Lovikka sist vi sågs. Lite svåra att leka i. Så jag köpte ett Ragginystan och gjorde två vantar samtidigt.

Roligt nog blev de såhär. Enfärgade på handdelen och helt olika. På tummarna börjar man se att de är av samma garn.


Vänstervanten är röd och högervanten blå. Valår i år eller? Eddie bryr sig inte. Hon är två år.

Klippans ullgarn, halvvante istället för vante

Det som skulle bli vantar av Klippans ullgarn blev halvvantar. Jag skrev i inlägget om processer och här berodde valet av slutprodukt på att jag ville göra processen kort. Helt enkelt.

Retrospektivt skulle jag ju kunna hävda att jag tänkte att dessa gula vantar skulle vara perfekta för våren, och att det var därför jag bestämde att de skulle vara halva hellre än hela. Men det vore ju inte hela sanningen. Sanningen är att jag blev uttråkad av det enahanda mönstret. Så enkelt är det.

De vackra händerna tillhör inte mig utan de tillhör ninjadottern som slet sig från datorn för att modella. Vackert böjde hon undan de fingrar som hade avskavt nagellack och frös sig igenom fotosessionen.

Vantarna behöver blockas lite, och kanske strykas lätt, men sedan är de klara. Halvvantarna, alltså. För det var ju det som det blev.

Klippans ullgarn, vantar och processer

Umeådottern frågade just om jag avgivit några nyårslöften, och det har jag inte. Men jag har gjort några nyårsföresatser och har en del nyårsönskningar. En sådan är att blogga mer, och blogga processer. Om jag bloggar stötvis blir det mer så att jag skriver om saker som jag redan är klar med eller om sådant som jag påbörjat, men inget om processen eller avslutningen. Jag tänker att om jag bloggar oftare så blir det mer fullständiga processer.

Nu har jag i alla fall börjat sticka flerfärgade vantar på magic loop. Umeådottern, som sitter med sina tentaförberedelser i en stol framför brasan tycker inte alls synd om mig när jag visar hur garnet trasslar sig och hon säger bara att jag får skylla mig själv.





Men det finns sätt att klara sig från det där trasslet. Som att lägga garnet ordentligt, ena vantens garn till höger och andra vantens till vänster. Och så att tänka lite när jag vänder, så att det inte blir för många varv snodda.

Och att hålla det gula och det vita garnet på rätt sida om varandra.

Garnet är ett tvåtrådigt ullgarn från Klippans Yllefabrik som brodern och systern och jag besökte på väg hem från vår skånska odyssé i höstas. 100 gram för 25 kronor. Helt OK om du frågar mig.





Jag startade vanten med en lettisk fläta à la Clara stickar. Mycket bra start. Krullar nästan inte upp sig alls.

Jag har 32+32 maskor och stickor 2,5 (tror jag), så det blir som vanligt en ganska tajt vante.





Istället för att göra ett vanthål på insidan gör jag en randig tumkil i sidan. Det var ett tag sedan jag gjorde tumkil, och det har redan skapat lite gråt och tandagnisslan med rutorna, framför allt för att ljusgult och offwhite inte är en bra kombo för kvällsstickning. Svårt att se vad som är vad, minst sagt.

Men nu idag tog jag fram de små stickmarkörerna som jag tiggde till mig i julklapp av mamman och systern, så nu ska det gå lättare att se övergången.

Ett nystan, en sticka, två tummar

Detta är inte ett par siamesiska tvillingar. Det är ett par vantar där jag stickar tummarna på samma sticka. Jag väntade för länge med att sticka vante två så jag glömde hur jag gjort i toppen. Och fick ta upp. Vilket inte är en dans i tvåfärgsstickning. 

Så nu blir tummarna på en sticka, så att de blir lika på en gång. 

Jag nystade upp lite garn med två trådar och stickar från båda ändarna av nystanet. Det går bra. Hittills...

Thistle mittens – getting over the obstacles

The first mittens I made from the Finullgarn, the star mittens, had the thumbs far too low. There was enough room at the top of the hands to store thinks. Like small buns or a couple of chestnuts or the likes.

As you can see from the grey horisontal stripe on the right mitten in the picture below, I made the same mistake on the first  one of the Thistle mittens. (Yeah the right one came out all wrong, funny, funny!) But in conference with my eldest daughter, I decided to go out on a limb and... cut a hole higher up, where the thumb should have been in the first place. (And when I knitted the second one, I made sure the hole was in the right place, see the mitten to the left.)

Of course I didn't just cut a hole.

I entered the pins in the stitches above and under the row where I wanted the hole. Then I carefully cut the threads, both the white and the grey, in the middle and drew them out, one stitch at the time. When I got to the ends on both sides, I turned the mitten inside out, and sewed them in very thoroughly.

And it worked. As you can see.

But I don't want to do that again. Really.

I will keep these mittens for myself. They are so pretty, but I have made so many mistakes with the fair isle pattern, that I don't want to give them away.

Thistle mittens – red, grey, off-white

So I got on with the next pair of mittens. This time with a self made pattern. I call it thistle, because the flowers were purple when I made it up, and the stalk and the leaves were green. But I wanted to work with the three colours that can never go wrong: Gray, off-white and red. Så maybe these are actually carnation mittens?

The palm side gets kind of striped, following the colour of the pattern on the other side.

Star mittens – finished!

Faire Isle knitting should look as nice on the inside as on the outside. You should be able to see the stars on the wrong side of the knitting, and you do, don't you?

Also the thumb differs from the original pattern.

And here they are. Finished. Fluffed on the inside (nailbrush!) and slightly damped and ironed on the outside. Now, the question is whether it is my dear sister or my dear eldest daughter that needs them the most.

I have already started planning the next pair. With my own pattern of thistles! And this pair costed me less than 75 SEK in yarn. Neat!

Star mittens update – hands

The hands are ready. This is the palm pattern. I chose to use a checkered pattern instead of the pattern suggested in the book. And the thumbs will be the easiest possible, Just twelve stitches times two straight up.

I have used a brush to smoothen the surface a little, and I will try to do the same to the inside when I am finished. This makes the wool less itchy and makes the mittens warmer. Not that they aren't warm enough already.

Star mittens in Finullgarn

I am working with a pair of mittens with an old Scanian star pattern from the book Sticka mössor vantar sockor! by Ann-Marie Nilsson. I don't follow the pattern exactly, since I just wanted to try out the nice Rauma Finullgarn that I bought in Oslo at Den Norske Husfliden last week.

Never before have I knitted anything with this fine needles, but it goes faster than I thought it would.

Peppermint Winter

Owl City has made this beautiful song called Peppermint Winter. This is also what I came to think about when I made these wrist warmers with their polkagris edging.

 These are for my lovely and beautiful daughter-in-law who had her birthday yesterday. I don't think she reads this blog, so I take my chances and post this already before she gets them.
 
 The yarn is grey Drops Andes and it comes in 100 g balls, so one is enough for this little one day project. The edges are made from scraps of Drops Lima, red and white.
 
 I also made a little star as a bonus.

Taste of Peppermint by Tingestar:

CO= cast on; K = knit; P = purl
Increases: KNL = knit left loop; KRL = knit right loop (see wonderfully smart video from Knittinghelp.com here)

CO 20 stitches with the grey Drops Andes on a round needle or sock needles. Knit in the round.
12 rounds: K.
6 rounds: K2 P2, repeat
12 rounds: K

Increases for the thumb:
Round 1: K12 KNL KRL K12
Round 2: K12 KNL K2 KRL K12
Round 3: K12 KNL K4 KRL K12

K12, put 12 on a string, K12
9 rounds: K

Cast off by knitting two stitches, put them back on the left needle and knit them together through their back loops. Knit one, put two back on left needle, and so on.

Pick up the 12 stitches that you left on a string, and knit 4 rounds. Cast off. To avoid getting a big hole in-between the thumb and the body of the mitten part, I picked up two of the body stitches and knit them together with the thumb stitches.

Take two strands of Drops Lima and crochet an edging on the top, at the bottom and on hte thumb.. One single crochet in each of the knit stitches.

And the star, of course

1: On a magic loop double crochet (DC) 12 with white Drops Andes. One slip stich in the first DC.
2: Chain stitch (CS) 6, 1 single crochet (SC) in 2nd DC, repeat.
3: 4 SC – 3 CS – 4 SC in each of the six chains.
4: Switch to red Drops Lima and SC all the way around the star.

My lovely knitting daughter

Lately one of my daughters has taken up knitting and she creates the most lovely things. Like these wollen mittens, perfect for the super cold climate in Umeå in the north of Sweden.


And a little beanie to go with it!

Dear Sis lost her mittens (vantar) on the train, so she just had to grab the crochet needle while spending time at my place this weekend. Pattern here. Turning her back at the Swedish second chance of Melodifestivalen (Eurovision song contest) she crocheted along, grumping and complaining about not being able to make it. Which she of course did, with excellence. As always. And she pimped them with a brodery. I think of leaving all my projects to her for pimping. She's the Pimpernel!

Virkade vantar klara

Lsys ville ha virkade vantar. Med lite vidd nedtill sa hon en gång. Gråa sa hon en gång.


Mitt egenpåhittade mönster fungerade inte eftersom jag uppenbarligen börjat virka lösare, så jag fick börja om massa gånger. Och till sist fick jag jobba på fri hand igen. Så kan det gå.

Det är i alla fall numera 30 fm i vantkroppen och 15 i tummen. Garn Järbos Raggi.
